Upstream Fish Passage

Upstream Fish Passage

Habitat Enhancement Efforts

As part of its FERC license for Box Canyon Dam, the PUD is required to provide upstream fish passage for three native migratory salmonid (salmon trout and Char) target species: Bull Trout, Westslope Cutthroat Trout, and Mountain Whitefish.

The upstream trap-and-haul type fishway will consist of: atwo independently operated entrances, a 27 step fish ladder, auxiliary water supply pump station, pre-sort holding pool, and a sorting facility. Target fish will be identified, measured, and tagged before being released upstream. Non-target fish will be released either immediately above or below the dam depending on whether or not they are native to the Pend Oreille River.
